Urban Hawker, Midtown, Manhattan
Well, this post is gonna change in tone from the one I’d planned. So, to start, I found this marvelous little Southeast Asian food hall in midtown, about 1/2 block from Radio City, called Urban Hawker. Stall after stall of wonderful foods and drinks at reasonable prices. We stopped by last weekend before seeing a show and the bill for 2 of us was about $40. I had the shrimp fried rice with freshly steamed broccoli and a soda. My daughter had the chicken tikka masala and a drink, both from different stalls. The stalls encompass Singaporean, Korean, Japanese, Indian and fusion cuisines and in several visits, I’d yet to have a bad meal. We had 30 minutes to curtain when we got there and ended up getting to the theater with 10 minutes to spare.
Now for the not so wonderful part. Urban Hawker is closing on July 17 after 5 years. The building is being sold and redeveloped and a wonderful haven of reasonably priced food will be gone. If you’re in midtown and looking for a place to eat, by all means, stop by at 135 West 50th Street, between 6th and 7th Avenues.
